Dangers of Drowsy Driving – Are you at risk?
We’ve all seen drunk driving statistics and most people understand the risk and dangers of intoxication. But did you know the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that drowsy driving was responsible for 795 deaths in 2017?
Drowsy driving is the potentially deadly combination of sleepiness or fatigue and driving. It typically happens when a person hasn’t slept well or enough, is taking medications, has an untreated sleep disorder, has consumed alcohol, or is a shift worker (night shift or a long shift).
Even if it doesn’t cause an accident, drowsy driving can affect a person’s ability to drive safely. For example, a drowsy driver has a slower reaction time, typically doesn’t pay close attention to the road, and often makes bad driving decisions.
As a driver, it’s important to be aware of drowsy driving warning signs. Here are a few questions to keep in mind.
- Are you yawning or blinking often?
- Do you have difficulty remembering the last few miles you just drove?
- Have you missed an exit?
- Are you drifting from your lane?
- Did you hit the rumble strip on the side of the road?
The good news is drowsy driving is completely preventable. First, get enough sleep. As an adult, it’s important to get at least seven hours of sleep. Teens need at least eight! If you have a sleep disorder, talk to your doctor about treatment options. Drink alcohol and take medications responsibly. Check labels to confirm it’s ok to drive while taking your medication.
