Involved in a Parking Lot Accident?

Here’s what you should do

Did you know it’s estimated that one out of every five car accidents occur in parking lots? Tens of thousands of crashes happen in parking lots and garages each year. These accidents result in hundreds of fatalities and thousands of injuries. Distraction seems to be the common theme. Technology, GPS programming, social media, texting, phone calls, and other passengers are the most common culprits.

Involved in a Parking Lot AccidentIn a 2016 National Safety Council opinion poll, 66% of US drivers made phone calls while driving in parking lots. Respondents also said they would:

  • Program their GPS systems (63%)
  • Text (56%)
  • Send or receive emails (50%)
  • Take photos or watch videos (49%)
  • Use social media (52%)

Even the most attentive drivers can find themselves in parking lot accidents. So, what should you do if you are involved in a parking lot accident?

  1. Check for injuries. Safety is most important. Call 911 if anyone is hurt.
  2. Call the police and file a car accident report. Even if there aren’t visible injuries, it’s essential to document the accident in case an injury arises later. Sometimes, you’re more shaken up at the moment and can’t easily identify your injury until later.
  3. Collect as much information as possible. Exchange names (drivers and passengers), phone numbers, insurance information, and vehicle license plate numbers. If you accidentally hit a parked car, jot down the vehicle license and model and leave a note with your contact information.
  4. Take photos. Don’t forget to take pictures of the damaged cars, skid marks, and anything you must submit to the insurance company and your lawyer.
  5. Look for witnesses and surveillance videos. Gather contact information from anyone who witnessed the accident.
  6. Contact your insurance company. It may seem extreme to contact your insurance company for a minor accident. Still, if you are sued, your insurance company could deny coverage if you don’t report the incident immediately.

Remember, if the incident is your fault, you must pay your deductible before your insurance company pays for your repairs. You’ll also be assigned points, which will probably increase your insurance rate.
