Motorcycle Safety Tips for Drivers
Motorcycles can be hazardous vehicles to drive. They do not have seatbelts or airbags to protect their operators in the event of an accident or collision. Using these vehicles safely and responsibly, especially along highways and at high speeds, takes excellent judgment, training, coordination, and balance. However, drivers of passenger vehicles must also use these same skills to help ensure the safety of motorcyclists while sharing the roadways. Below are some tips for passenger vehicle drivers that may help decrease the chance of an accident.
- While driving near a motorcycle, allow them enough space to pass your vehicle. Do not try to speed up or block cyclists from passing.
- Keep a safe distance between your vehicle and motorcyclists while on the road. Motorcyclists may split lanes or make sudden and frequent lane changes to avoid traffic. Allow these drivers enough room to maneuver their bikes so that they can safely travel and share the roadway with others.
- Always be conscious of your blind spots as a driver. Motorcycles are smaller than passenger vehicles, and blind spots can make them harder to see when changing lanes or using your rearview mirrors. As a general rule, one should always turn one’s head to check one’s blind spots for other motorists before changing lanes.
