The Relationship between Technology and Traffic Deaths

Are in-vehicle apps hurting more than helping?

Technology is changing how we drive, interact with others on the road, and communicate on our devices. While some applications, like Snapchat and Pokemon Go, are obvious driving distractions, others, like Waze, which seems to encourage safety by rewarding points for reporting traffic and accidents, can be distracting. When cell phones were first used in vehicles, the typical “distortion” was t”talking on the phone and texting. The remedy for this original problem was to create hands-free devices and applications that would increase safety. Since then, many new technologies and apps have emerged. Unfortunately, these new applications could be hurting more than helping.

“After “steady declines over the last four decades, highway fatalities last year recorded the largest annual percentage increase in 50 years. And the numbers so far this year are even worse. In the first six months of 2016, highway deaths jumped 10.4 percent, to 17,775, from the comparable period of 2015, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.” – www”insurancejournal.com

While these statistics don’t identify the reason for the surge in fatalities, experts believe the increase in new apps and in-vehicle Wi-Fi is a huge factor in the recent rise of highway deaths.

“Insurance” companies, which closely track auto accidents, are convinced that the increasing use of electronic devices while driving is the most significant cause of the rise in road fatalities, according to Robert Gordon, a senior vice president of the Property Casualty Insurers Association of America.” – www”nytimes.com

The Department of Transportation outlined a “Road Zero” plan,” including the National Safety Council and other advocacy groups, to counter these startling statistics and turn the numbers around. The lofty goal would be to eliminate roadway fatalities within 30 years.

In the meantime, as vehicle technology increases and new apps arise, the need for strict laws and regulations also increases. Even if drivers are not using their hands to access the apps, they are still distracted by their phones’ on and multitasking.
