Surviving Financially While Waiting For SSD Benefit Approval

If you are one of the thousands of Sacramento-area residents thinking about filing for Social Security Disability benefits, you probably already know the process can be very long and time consuming. If you’re currently struggling with your disability, keeping your job can also be difficult. Providing for your family, paying your bills, and paying for medical treatment is not only stressful, it may make you feel hopeless.

At Eason & Tambornini, we work with you through the Social Security Disability appeal process and do our best to expedite each step. Unfortunately, there will be months, and sometimes longer periods of time before you start receiving these benefits. Thankfully, there are some free resources that will help ease the financial burden while you’re waiting for your benefits to start.

You don’t have to wait to start taking advantage of these resources. You can start the process today!

Help with your utilities. Contact your local social security department and they can give you the contact information you need for help in this area. Some offices may offer one-time assistance for bills. Another great place that may be able to help you with your bills is the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIEAP).

Help with your medical expenses. Again, your local social services department or county health department should be able to point you in the right direction here, providing the names of free clinics, churches, charitable organizations, or prescription assistance programs with resources available to those in need. You may also consider filing for Medicaid, because some counties allow you to receive medical benefits while your claim is being processed, even if your disability claim is ultimately denied. – www.ssdrc.com

Help with food and basic necessities. Most cities have food assistance programs, food banks, and church food closets for those who need extra help providing food themselves and their families. You also may be eligible for food stamps and even WIC, if you have minor children in your home. Here is more information about WIC. http://www.fns.usda.gov/wic/women-infants-and-children-wic
