Wrong-way drivers

In a study done by the NTSB from 2004-2009, there were 1,566 deaths caused by wrong-way drivers. This study also found that around 60% of these wrong-way driver deaths were linked with alcohol use.

Wrong-way driver safety tips

  • If you witness a wrong-way driver while on the road, you should quickly and safely move your vehicle out of the wrong-way driver’s path, and when it is safe, call 911.
  • Keep your eyes on the road and scan the horizon ahead for more road hazards.
  • Avoid the fast lane when driving at night or early mornings. Most wrong-way drivers will ride in the right lane at night, which is the far-left lane when going the wrong way.
  • Keep your headlights on at night. If a wrong-way driver sees your headlights, they might realize they are driving the wrong way.
