Will insurance adjusters lie?

My name is Matt Eason. I have been practicing personal injury law in the Sacramento area for over 25 years, and I am regularly asked, “Will an insurance adjuster lie?”

Please click here to view the video.

Will Insurance Adjusters LieI would love to jump up and down and say yes, they will lie to you. The reality is insurance adjusters are human beings that are trying to do a job. Some will flat lie. Some human beings will flat lie. Those are unfortunate adjusters, unfortunate human beings, but they do exist.

As a big picture, though, insurance adjusters will not lie to you necessarily, but they will distort the information coming to you. They have a job to do. Their job is to minimize the risk that their insurance company is exposed to, and by reducing that risk, they will try to talk you out of making claims. They will try to reduce your claims and minimize your claims. Are those lies? Or are those pushing an interest or platform?

To categorize all insurance companies into one group or one class is not fair. It’s like saying all Yankee fans are bad people. They are not. There are some lovely Yankee fans. Insurance adjusters, as a class, as a group of people, have an agenda, which is to their client, the insurance company. Because they are pushing that agenda, many things they say will often come off as lies or half-truths.

I would only take what an insurance adjuster tells me at face value by doing my due diligence and being a little skeptical of what they are trying to accomplish. The insurance adjuster aims to reduce the risk of exposure to an insurance company. If you are making a claim or might be making a claim, then, of course, they are worried about the company’s exposure, and they are going to try and minimize that exposure.

For the last 25 years, I have fought insurance adjusters daily. As such, I would love to jump up and down and call them all liars. The reality is they are not. They are human beings that are doing a job.
